The Art of Gentle Detoxification
Experience the subtle power of flow and renewal
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is an incredibly gentle, specialized form of bodywork that utilizes precise, rhythmic pumping and circular hand movements. By subtly stretching and torquing the skin at a highly specific pressure, direction, and speed, this technique stimulates the natural contraction of lymphatic vessels to accelerate fluid clearance and optimize tissue recovery.
First pioneered in France in 1932 by Dr. Emil and Estrid Vodder, the Vodder Method has become the global gold standard for manually supporting the lymphatic system and reducing localized swelling.
Understanding the Lymphatic System
How your body maintains fluid balance and immune defense.
Operating as a critical pillar of your immune defense, the lymphatic system consists of a vast, body-wide network of vessels, tissues, and organs. Its primary job is to collect "lymph"—the fluid that naturally filters out of your blood vessels into surrounding tissues—and cleanse it of bacteria and pathogens before returning it to the bloodstream. Ultimately, a healthy lymphatic system maintains perfect fluid equilibrium while protecting the body from illness.
What it Feels Like
Gentle precision for internal restoration.
MLD is distinct from traditional massage. It uses a rhythmic, skin-stretching technique that is as light as a feather.
Because the lymphatic system is delicate and sits just beneath the surface, this gentle touch is required to optimize flow. Most clients find the experience deeply sedative, often leading to a state of profound relaxation.
Areas of Care & Clinical Indications
A versatile therapy supporting post-surgical recovery, chronic conditions, and systemic wellness.
MLD is highly adaptable and can be safely applied to almost any region of the body, including the face, neck, chest, back, abdomen, arms, legs, and gluteal region.
Because it effectively manages fluid dynamics and calms the nervous system, it is frequently used to support a wide range of clinical and wellness concerns:
- Post-Surgical & Recovery: Pre- and post-op surgical sites, burns, dental procedures, and acute orthopedic injuries (such as sprains, strains, contusions, bursitis, or tendinitis).
- Chronic Conditions: Lymphedema, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI), and management of chronic arthritis.
- Skin & Systemic Wellness: Inflammatory dermatological conditions (including acne, rosacea, and eczema), as well as targeted relief for tired or puffy eyes.
- Neurological & Inflammatory Relief: Migraines, tension headaches, and TMJ dysfunction (TMJD).
- Internal Balance: Digestive and bowel irregularities, sleep issues like insomnia, and hormonal symptoms associated with PMS, endometriosis, pregnancy, and breastfeeding.
- Overall Health: Enhancing systemic detoxification, boosting immunity, and promoting general wellbeing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Common inquiries regarding your care.
It’s a common misconception that deeper is better. The lymphatic system is a delicate network of vessels located just beneath the surface of the skin. If we apply too much pressure, those vessels collapse, and the drainage stops. The feather-light touch is a clinical requirement to get the fluid moving effectively.
Yes. Because MLD increases the flow of lymph and blood, it is not recommended for individuals with acute infections, congestive heart failure, kidney failure, untreated malignant tumor, or undiagnosed blood clots, among other conditions. If you have a history of these conditions, please let us know so we can ensure the treatment is safe for you.
Yes, this is very common. As the treatment successfully moves excess fluid and metabolic waste toward your lymph nodes to be filtered, your kidneys will work to eliminate it from the body. We recommend drinking plenty of water following your appointment to support this process.
While you do not need a referral for general wellness or "detox" sessions, we highly recommend consulting your physician if you are seeking MLD for post-surgical care or have been diagnosed with lymphedema. We are happy to coordinate with your medical team to ensure your care is seamless.
